Feeling Overwhelmed?

Do you ever feel completely overwhelmed? Like you have so much on your plate and you just can't handle it? Like things are coming at you so fast that you don't have time to process it all?

Yeah, me too.

It's totally normal to not be able to handle everything that is thrown at you. Humans are not superheroes; they can't always be on top of things--that includes you. 

I recently started a summer internship at an insurance company. I work with corporate communications and I'm the only intern in my department. I went in my first day expecting a prepared list of things that I would need to accomplish this summer. That's not what I got.

I got three different people giving me different assignments, one right after the other. I got meetings after meetings where I wasn't able to follow everything they were saying. I got some projects that the previous interns had been working on and I was expected to jump right in and understand everything that was already there. I got a million faces introducing themselves to me and a million cubicles to find my way through.

This internship was not what I was expecting, it was overwhelming, and I thought I had to jump in and do everything perfectly.

This mindset left me coming home from my third day crying and wondering how I was oing to survive all summer.

The thing is, I didn't have to jump in and now everything right away. I didn't have to take on every single thing that was put in front of me. I didn't have to be perfect.

Once that realization hit me, or was gently handed to me by my fiancé, my racing heart started to slow down and I started to remember all the things I was excited about the internship. The pressure to be perfect was weighing on me so heavily that I was blind to all the good things in front of me. That's what lies can do to you.

You might not have an overwhelming new internship, but I bet you experience an overwhelming pressure to be 100% at times when you just aren't capable.

AND THAT'S OKAY.

I am here to tell you that you don't have to be perfect. You don't have to do it all. If you are feeling overwhelmed by everything on your plate, take some things off. That feeling is your body telling you to take a breath and put some things back. If your plate had more food on it and what your body could eat, would you force yourself to eat it? No. Just like that, if you can't handle everything on your to-do list, then take some things off. I promise the world won't fall apart if you don't do everything. In fact, your world will feel a lot better when you let yourself take a break.

Please, take care of yourself and stop believing the lie that you need to be perfect 100% of the time.
